Treasure Hunt: Social Learning in the Field∗

چکیده
We seed noisy information to members of a real-world social network to study how information diffusion and information aggregation jointly shape social learning. Our environment features substantial social learning. We show that learning occurs via diffusion which is highly imperfect: signals travel only up to two steps in the conversation network and indirect signals are transmitted noisily. We then compare two theories of information aggregation: a naive model in which people double-count signals that reach them through multiple paths, and a sophisticated model in which people avoid double-counting by tagging the source of information. We show that to distinguish between these models of aggregation, it is critical to explicitly account for imperfect diffusion. When we do so, we find that our data are most consistent with the sophisticated tagged model. JEL Classification: C91, C93, D83 ∗András Kiss and Jenő Pál provided outstanding research assistance. متن کاملA Treasure Hunt With An Empathic Virtual Tutor: (Demonstration)
We present a demonstration of a Treasure Hunt Application with an Empathic Virtual Tutor. During the treasure hunt, this empathic agent adapts its interaction based on the affective state of the user to improve learning experience. We demonstrate the application domain; the technology used; and the app focusing on the empathic strategies applied.
متن کاملInfluencing the Learning Experience Through Affective Agent Feedback in a Real-World Treasure Hunt: (Extended Abstract)
We explore the effect of the behaviour of a virtual robot agent in the context of a real-world treasure-hunt activity carried out by children aged 11–12. We compare three conditions: a traditional paper-based treasure hunt, along with a virtual robot on a tablet which provides either neutral or affective feedback during the treasure hunt. The results of the study suggest that the use of the vir...
متن کاملA Treasure Hunt Model for Inquiry-Based Learning in the Development of a Web-based Learning Support System
One of the main problems of web-based learning is staying motivated at a sufficient level. Learning games offering challenges and entertainment may stimulate student motivation for learning and mitigate this problem. Web-based learning support systems combined with learning games may efficiently promote learning by encouraging student participation in learning. This study introduces a treasure ...

We seed a large real-world social network with binary information and analyze subsequent social learning. A unique feature of our field experiment is that we measure both the pre-existing social networks and the actual conversation network. Our experiment allows us to test how rational agents behave when processing information that originates within their social network. We find that informatio...

The combination of informal learning and mobile outdoor games can be seen as a relevant arena for conducting novel learning activities that involve children in different tasks including physical motion, problem solving, inquiry and collaboration. These are activities that support different cognitive and social aspects of learning. Co-design and human centric design practices have been the focus...
